i wanted to post a few pics today b/c i started to work on some of the elements for my valentine's day project... i don't think it will make much sense overall, especially b/c i have been keeping exactly what i am making close to my chest, but of course i had to show off the pictures regardless, LOL. ;)
#1, 3, & 4: luster dust that i used to dye the royal icing i used to make flower decorations... the name "luster dust" is somewhat misleading b/c the kelly green is actually matte, LOL. anyway, this powder can also be brushed on a final product or mixed w/ a little alcohol and used as edible paint. it's most often used to give a hint of color and shine to fondant-covered confections (alliteration FTW).
#2: the bowls i used to mix my colors. really, i am just playing around w/ the camera at this point, LMAO.
#5: unbaked chocolate soil which will be both an element and a garnish for the final product. it's the simplest thing in the world ~ recipe below ~ and i got the idea from the woman behind one of my most favorite food blogs, lemon pi. she has the best desserts and the PRETTIEST pictures: even if you're not a chef/foodie, you will heart her blog. promise.
CHOCOLATE SOIL:
~ 1 cup brown sugar
~ 1 cup graham cracker crumbs (or almond flour)
~ 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
~ 1/3 cup cocoa powder (or other flavored powder - instant coffee would be good)
~ pinch of salt
~ 1/2 cup (one stick) melted butter
1. whisk together all the ingredients except the butter.
2. pour in the butter and continue mixing until all the crumbs are moistened.
3. put in a 300*F oven until dry and crumbly.
i can't wait to show everyone the final product... i had some wins and some fails today while working on everything, but i am sure i will end up w/ something that, although not perfectly gorgeous, will be passable and most importantly: tasty! stay tuned.
